Don't Do It Yourself when it comes to Gas Safety

When it comes to gas safety, get in the experts and don’t do it yourself.

Northern Gas Networks (NGN) is responsible for the region’s free gas emergency service on 0800 111 999, responding to emergencies any time of the day or night.

“It is illegal to work on gas pipes and appliances unless you are properly qualified. Yet every year, a handful of people attempt to service their own gas appliances putting themselves and others at risk,“ said Dave Hutchison, head of health and safety with the pipeline company.

Gas boilers and fires should be serviced annually by a CORGI registered installer to ensure they are in good working order and flues and chimneys are not blocked.

Names of installers operating in your area can be obtained from CORGI on 01256 372300.

“It may be tempting to try and carry out work on gas appliances yourself,” added Mr Hutchison. “But I cannot stress enough the need to get in a professional. Badly fitted or poorly serviced appliances could lead to a gas escape or carbon monoxide poisoning. At Northern Gas Networks safety is our number one priority. Don’t DIY and take a risk with your own safety.”

Remember, if you smell gas you should always call the national gas emergency service free on 0800 111 999 at any time of the day or night. An engineer will call to make the situation safe and there is no charge for the service.
